Consistency is Key

All social media gurus have tips on when to post, how many posts per week, where posts are effective, and those tips are often in dispute. My tip for you is CONSISTENCY. When you are starting out on social media whether you are marketing a product or service, or letting people know about your latest blog – consistency matters.

Choose platforms that you will actually use and engage with your followers. If you hate Twitter then don’t use the platform, even if you have heard experts tell you otherwise. If you love Instagram then go for it! Social media is social so it has to be social to you as well.

Once you have the platform or platforms you want to use then make a calendar of when you want to post – which days are best and the time that works for you. Be realistic! If you know you can only manage three posts per week on Facebook then choose three days that are best for you. Additionally, choose times that work for you. Social media is 24/7! While you can make a  guess when your followers and the ideal audience is likely to view your posts – it’s just that, a guess. Better to go with what’s best for your schedule then adjust to what you think your followers would prefer.

Use your posting calendar to jot down special dates and ideas you have for posts going out 3 – 6 months. This gives you some direction to your posts and also allows for variety. Make some posts just for fun and others with deeper content. Mix it up so that your followers are interested. Remember – social media is social. Pay attention to the posts of those you follow – why are you interested in reading them, what qualities are there that you could emulate?
