Before you say “duh” hear me out. Some small businesses try to be everything to everyone and unless you are Amazon it’s not possible. Even Amazon doesn’t get it right all the time. What small businesses do best is connect with clients and customers that can benefit from your services or products and who you can focus attention on.
Most small businesses can take the time to customize the service they provide. They have the ability to be flexible and strategic with their deliverables. They can take the time to find the best approaches to solve problems. And they can focus on each customer or clients needs working through issues if necessary.
Larger businesses, like an Amazon, simply cannot do this. They are looking at volume and algorithms. We are able to focus on each customer, each client, in a way that larger businesses simply are not able to do. This is a huge benefit fo us and our clients.
Recently I was talking with a prospective client about their needs and expectations. It became clear quickly that they wanted something that I wasn’t comfortable providing. I knew we weren’t a good fit. I was able to steer them to alternative options and provide them with some quick tips they could use immediately. I felt good about the decision and they felt good that I’d been able to help move them toward a better choice.
Sometimes things aren’t a fit. Everything doesn’t work for everybody. So focus on being you and working your business. Leave Amazon to do their thing.
